BABY FURNITURE FAQ

Find the information you need in our most frequently asked questions about baby furniture.

What should I look for in a crib?

When it comes to baby cribs, safety should always be a top priority. Below are the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s crib guidelines:

- There should be no more than 2 3/8 inches between the slats.
- Corner posts should measure 1/16th of an inch high (or less) to help prevent clothing from catching.
- Headboards and footboards should not have cutouts.
- There should be no more than two fingers between the edge of the mattress and the side of the crib.
- The crib should have smooth corners.

How should I choose a crib mattress?

When choosing a mattress for their crib, look for options that are firm but comfortable and fit snugly into place, with no more than two fingers between the edge of the mattress and the side of the crib. Both of these factors play a critical role in keeping your baby safe in their crib. Beyond that, you might consider:

- Integrated waterproofing. By choosing a mattress with a waterproof cover built in, all you'll have to do is wipe it down if accidents occur.
- A dual-stage mattress. With one firm side for infants and a slightly softer side for toddlers, dual-stage crib mattresses allow you to use the same mattress for years.
- GREENGUARD certification. Because your little one is going to spend a significant portion of their days and nights in their baby crib, consider a mattress that's GREENGUARD certified, which indicates that the mattress has been tested and evaluated to meet stringent chemical emissions limits.

Do I really need to anchor our nursery furniture?

The short answer is yes. Nursery furniture (and any furniture in your home that's heavy, tall, or precarious) should be anchored. Things like changing tables, TVs, TV stands, bookcases, and dressers can put your child in danger if they pull or climb on them.

Are changing tables safe?

Yes! Just be sure to anchor your changing table securely and never leave your child unattended on it. Additionally, you’ll want to look for a changing table or dresser topper with 2" guardrails on all four sides and a changing pad that’s lower in the middle than on the sides (which can help keep your little one from rolling side to side). Drawers or shelves should also be easy to reach, allowing you to keep one hand on your baby as you reach for their diapering supplies with the other.
